Medical radiographers are experts in the art and science of diagnostic medical radiography and are valuable members of the healthcare team.
With the advent of computers and the increasing use of technology in the healthcare setting, radiographers are at the cutting edge of scientific technology, working with the latest advances in medical care. As an essential member of the healthcare team, radiographers, also known as radiologic technologists, use their knowledge of physics, radiation protection, human anatomy and physiology and a mastery of highly technical equipment to create medical images of organs, tissues, bones and vessels. Medical imaging examinations often are the first diagnostic tool doctors use to diagnose injuries and disease processes. Another intricate role of the radiographer is to be educated in pathological processes and provide quality patient care and education during imaging procedures.
Mission
The Associate of Science Degree Radiography program at Casper College produces competent medical radiographers eligible for immediate employment or advanced education, by offering high quality educational and clinical experiences.
Purpose
The Radiography Program at Casper College provides quality learning opportunities for its students in order to accomplish its mission. It also encourages and supports life-long learning. By maintaining national accreditation, the radiography program will prepare students to meet the demands of the profession. This includes technical skills, as well as their ability to be intellectually adaptive and communicate well, to think analytically, to integrate knowledge, and to appreciate cultural and social diversity. Graduates will learn to exhibit and apply high ethical values and standards of practice in regard to patient care in the healthcare field.
Program Goals
1. Through integrated recruitment activities, select those students who demonstrate maturity, motivation, academic ability and professional aspiration to successfully complete a 24-month educational radiography program.
2. Providing those students accepted into the program a quality educational experience, which exceeds program accreditation requirements.
a. This includes maintaining high standards in regard to:
i. Certification rate
ii. Certification scores
iii. Employment rate
iv. Graduate satisfaction
v. Employer satisfaction
3. Provide students accepted into the radiography program with didactic and clinical education based on sound learning principles, and allowing students to master radiographic theory using the latest instructional devices and techniques, (Library Resources, Textbooks, Audio-Visual, and Video-Tape).
a. The program will provide students with an effective on campus laboratory learning experience designed to bridge didactic and clinical education.
b. Students will be provided a clinical environment rich with learning opportunities using the latest state of the art radiographic equipment.
c. Upon successful completion of the program students will possess the skills necessary for maximum vertical or lateral career mobility or immediate employment as an entry level radiographer.
4. The program will provide the professional radiography community with graduates who are able to function as an active member of the health care team with advanced problem solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.
a. Giving students an integrated academic background emphasizing an understanding for life-long learning to ensure successful personal and professional growth.
b. Provide students with the expertise and insight to provide excellent patient care through critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills.
5. Support faculty development in the field of medical imaging, accreditation standards, and educational theory and practice to maintain the high standards of the radiography program.
