Admissions and Registration

When will I be accepted to Casper College?
Students are fully accepted to Casper College after they have completed the application for admission, have taken either the ACT, SAT or COMPASS within the past two years and have provided those test scores, supplied official transcripts from their high school and any other college or universities attended. Students must also provide proof of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) immunization. Once all of these pieces of information are provided to the office of Admissions and Students Records students are fully admitted and may register for classes.

When is the application deadline?
No deadline exists. You are encouraged to apply at least four weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. Full admissions must be granted for a student to enroll in classes.

How do I apply for admission if I graduated from a home school program?
Casper College requires a copy of a high school equivalency diploma from an accredited home school program recognized by the State Department of Education in which the program is registered. Students must also provide either ACT, SAT or COMPASS test scores, proof of MMR immunization and any transcripts from previous college or university course work. Students who have completed a non-accredited home based education must provide proof of MMR and COMPASS test scores that have been taken within the previous 12 month period and must be at or above the following levels: 45 pre-algebra, 62 reading, 43 writing.

Can I apply for admissions if I did not graduate from high school?
Yes, a non-high school graduate who presents a copy of a high school equivalency diploma as evidenced by the successful completion of the General Education Development (GED) tests can be admitted to Casper College. Students must also supply  either ACT, SAT or COMPASS test scores, show proof of MMR immunization and supply any transcripts from previous college or university course work.

How do I know if I’m a resident or nonresident?
A student is classified as a resident if they meet any of the following guidelines: a graduate from a Wyoming high school or GED who enrolls at Casper College within 12 months after graduation; individuals who can provide written verification that he/she has lived in Wyoming continuously for one year prior to enrolling; a legal dependent under the age of 24 or a spouse of a Wyoming resident; legal dependent under the age of 24 of a Wyoming community college graduate; individual on active military duty in Wyoming; or written verification from an employer indicating the student will be employed for at least seven months and that employment is the student’s primary means of financial support.

Can nonresidents apply to become residents?
Yes, nonresidents may be reclassified any time prior to the end of the published refund period of any term if the student meets any of the resident qualifications.

How do I know if I qualify for WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange)?
Students who are residents of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah or Washington qualify as WUE students. WUE is a program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). WICHE students may enroll at Casper College at WUE rates which are 150 percent of the Wyoming resident tuition.

How do I register for classes as a first time student?
After students are fully admitted and have received an acceptance letter from the Office of Admissions and Student Records, they may register at one of Casper College’s registration days. Students will meet with a faculty advisor in their area of interest and will then register for class on Casper College’s Web Advisor program.

Can I change my major?
Students can change their major at any time during their college career in the Office of Admissions and Student Records.

Do I have to take the ACT/SAT test?
Students are not required to take the ACT or SAT, however if they have not taken either one within two years of applying for admission they will be required to take the COMPASS test. These scores are used to place students in math and English courses. The COMPASS test is administered on campus for a cost of $10.

Does Casper College accept international students?
Yes, international students follow the same admissions requirements as domestic students. In addition they must also provide: 1) certification of English language proficiency, a score of 500 or more (paper/pencil version) or 173 or more (computer version) on the “Test of English as a Foreign Language”; 2) a “Foreign Student Statement of Finances”; 3) a deposit equal to one semester of out-of-state tuition; 4) verification of, or funds for the purchase of, health and injury insurance which is recognized in the United States.

Does Casper College accept credit for courses taken while in high school i.e. advanced placement, international baccalaureate, dual enrollment, or honors courses? 
Credit for college level courses that have been completed while in high school is accepted when any of the following requirements have been met:  the advanced placement cut scores are met or exceeded, an international baccalaureate diploma is granted and specific test scores are met, or when credit is granted from an accredited college.

Can I visit Casper College?
Yes! You are welcome to visit Casper College Monday through Friday between 9am and 2pm. You may also choose to visit during either our fall visit day program or spring visit day event. Paying for College

How do I apply for financial aid?
To apply for federal grants, loans, or work-study at Casper College, students must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA form can be completed and submitted over the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  The form may also be obtained from any high school guidance office or from the Casper College Student Financial Assistance Office. Casper College recommends students apply for federal aid no later than May 1 each year. Documents received prior to this date will receive priority consideration.

Do you offer scholarships at Casper College?
Yes, Casper College offers a number of general scholarships and division scholarships. Application forms can be obtained from the Casper College Office of Student Financial Assistance.

Do I have to be full-time to receive financial aid?
Students do not have to be enrolled full-time to receive federal financial aid. However, they must be enrolled as a degree seeking student for six or more credit hours and must meet and maintain certain academic standards to remain eligible to receive assistance for each term.

Academic

What majors/programs do you offer?
Casper College offers a wide range of opportunities and degree program choices. Students may further their education in art, agriculture, business, computers, education, health professions, language and literature, liberal arts, media and communications. Students may also pursue degrees in life, physical, or social sciences. We also offer training in a variety of trades programs. Be sure to visit our website or campus to learn more.

Can I take a class over the internet?
Casper College offers a wide and growing variety of distance education coursework via the Internet, compressed video, multimedia CDs, and telecourses. Distance education classes fit conveniently into busy work or family schedules, allowing students to work on college degrees in their hometown. Students may register for these classes as non-degree seeking students or as formally admitted students seeking a degree from Casper College.

Can I change my advisor?
Students may request a new advisor at any time if another faculty member is available within the department. To initiate the change students should obtain a Notification of Change form from the Admissions and Student Records Office. A signature from the new advisor is required to confirm the change.

Can I receive a bachelor’s degree at Casper College?
Casper College awards only Associate Degrees and one year certificates in certain department programs are conferred at Casper College. An associate degree requires completion of at least 64 credit hours which count for the freshman and sophomore year of a bachelor degree program.

Housing

What are the residence hall like?
Residence hall living is available to unmarried degree students that are enrolled at least half time. Casper College has three residence halls, all are three story brick buildings proving easy access to the classroom buildings on campus and campus activities. All of the residence halls are co-ed with men residing on one wing and women on the other. Each wing is staffed by a resident assistant.

Do I have to live in the residence halls?
Casper College recommends the on-campus living experience as an integral part of the total educational process but does not require students to live in the residence halls.

Are there any apartments available for single students?
Yes, Thorson Apartments on campus is available for single students, apartments are furnished but do not include cooking facilities. Students living in Thorson Apartments are required to purchase a meal plan for use at Robert Commons Cafeteria.

Do you have child care?
Yes, the Inga Thorsen Family Resource Center (FRC) is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs and provides early childhood education and childcare services, as well as parenting education programs for members of the Casper College campus community. The FRC can accommodate children ages infant through kindergarten and is open Monday through Friday while school is in session.

Student Life

Do you have sports?
Casper College is the home of the Thunderbirds. Varsity sports include men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s rodeo teams. All are nationally recognized programs boasting several national championships. The basketball and volleyball teams are members of the Wyoming Community College Athletic Conference and Regional IX under the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The Casper College rodeo team is a member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) and compete in the Central Rocky Mountain Region against both two- and four-year schools.

Do you have intramural sports and student clubs?
Yes, the Student Activities Office offer a variety of intramural sports for students including basketball, volleyball, softball, putt-putt golf, bowling and flag football to name a few. Several student clubs and organizations are also available covering a wide array of student backgrounds and interests.

Are there health services available on campus?
Yes, the Casper College Student Health Service Office is staffed by a registered nurse. Services, most of which are free, are available for students with current Casper College student IDs. Services include, but are not limited to: physical exams, administration of immunizations and allergy shots, urinalysis, emergency first aid care, office visits, coordination of medical care with community resources, personal health education programs and consultations, a women’s specialty clinic one day per week and a three-hour general physician clinic one day per week.

Is tutoring available?
Many students at Casper College are more successful because of our excellent student resource centers. The mathematics lab, English lab, and writing center provide assistance to students who drop-in during lab hours. Also available on an appointment basis is one-on-one tutoring. All tutoring services are free to Casper College students.

Are there work-out facilities on campus?
Yes, there is a fitness center on campus that is available for use by students. Students may either register for the Physical Fitness and Wellness course and take the class for credit or may choose to audit the class in order to access the center. The center is designed as an open lab to meet student’s needs and places emphasis on strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. Free weights are also available.

Is student employment available?
Degree-seeking students in good standing and enrolled at least half-time may apply to work up to 15 hours per week. All on-campus positions pay above minimum wage. Job openings can be viewed on the Career Center Web pages. Three funding sources enable students to work on-campus: 
1. Federal Work-Study:  Students must file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and meet income guidelines to be eligible for federally funded work-study. Eligibility is determined by the Financial Assistance Office. See “Financial Assistance” (Federal Work-Study).
 2. Institutional:   All eligible students may apply for institutional or college-funded positions.
3. Grants:  All eligible students may apply for positions funded through various grants.

Do I need to bring my own computer?
Casper College provides students with access to computer labs in many buildings. These labs provide student access to the World Wide Web, office software, and free printing privileges. Computer labs are open during building hours typically 8am-10pm Monday through Thursday. Students who would require access to a computer outside of laboratory hours may choose to provide their own computer. Students who have a wireless capable laptop have access to wireless internet hotspots around campus.
