The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for fire service employment or job advancement within the profession, or for transfer to a four-year school for additional training in fire science management.
Courses allow students to gain valuable experience and to obtain certifications. The curriculum includes eight required core classes: strategy and tactics, rescue practices, hazardous materials, wildland fire fighting, fire investigation, fire prevention, apparatus and procedures and basic emergency care. These eight courses give students a broad base of fire service knowledge.
The Fire Science Program is becoming more diverse and relevant. Students receive more hands-on training. They have the chance to experience "a day in the life of a fireman" by working a 24-hour shift at the Casper Fire Department.
The backing of the Casper College administration and the donation of equipment from various companies allow us to offer more practical courses. For example, the City of Casper donated a 1976 Pierce Pumper to the program a few years ago. Students refurbished the "old pump," and today we use the Casper College fire engine for training.
