Course offerings within the Language and Literature Division help you learn valuable skills critical for employment and success. The Language and Literature Division consists of the departments of Communication, English, and World Languages. Each department provides a foundation in written and oral communication, visual literacy, language skills, literature, and liberal studies. A recent poll of American employers found that
96% require workers who have a command of the English language
95% demand reading and writing skills
94% insist on critical thinking skills, and
40% mandate the ability to speak Spanish

An undergraduate degree in English is valuable preparation for a future in many professional areas including business, federal service, law, and medicine. English continues to be excellent preparation for a career in education.
- English for those who want to teach high school English
Coursework for English majors wanting to teach high school English include curriculum in Education and Psychology.
- English with a Writing Emphasis
The writing emphasis is recommended for anyone who is interested in being a professional free-lance writer or a technical writer, or in working in public relations, journalism, communication or teaching. It also is appropriate for pre-law, pre-medicine or business majors and for anyone who wants to strengthen communication skills.
- World Language
- An Associate of Arts Degree in one of three core languages of French, German, or Spanish from the Department of World Languages will better prepare you to successfully enter the global economy. Besides being a degree that easily transfers to the University of Wyoming and many other four-year schools, you can earn this degree alone or in addition to earning degrees in education, English, Communication, the fine arts, Political Science, Women’s Studies, and many other areas.
- Liberal Arts
- A broad educational background for those who have not selected a specific major. This program parallels the first two years of general education for a baccalaureate degree. It aids students in developing intellectual curiosity and building a broad foundation for future studies.
