WWQ & PCA Don Hudson Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, valued at $350, is available to students/operators who wish to take a credit class at Casper College that is listed in the Water Quality Technology curriculum. Applicants mush be residents of Wyoming and a currently certified Wyoming operator to be considered. Applications for this fall are due by August 22, 2008 and will be awarded for the upcoming Fall 2008 semester. Two scholarships may be granted. Don Hudson was the first executive director of the Wyoming Water Quality (WWQ) and Pollution Control Association (PCA). Don was a strong proponent of operator education. He obtained his college education by working during the days and going to school at night. It was because of his belief in education and operator training that the WWQ/PCA honored Don by naming this award for him upon his passing.
WATER QUALITY CEU COURSES
- ASSE Cross Connection Tester Certification

This class is designed to prepare students for the American Society of Sanitary Engineers (ASSE) backflow tester’s certification test. Topics covered include an overview of cross connection programs, hydraulic principles, test gauges, parts and terminology, applications and installations, ASSE test procedures for all devices, troubleshooting, and test failures and causes. The instructor is ASSE certified and the certification exam will be offered on the last day of class (there are 14 exam openings). The ASSE tester application will be sent to you after you register. Students must document five years of experience in the plumbing or drinking water industry on the ASSE application to be eligible for the ASSE tester exam. Fees include the textbooks, ASSE exam proctor, and ASSE exam ($100 value). This course is subject to a minimum enrollment. This course is funded by a grant from Region VII Office of Drinking Water.

- ASSE Cross Connection Re-Certification

Completing this re-certification class will renew your ASSE Tester License for three years. You must re-certify within six months of your tester license expiration date. Your tester license will not be valid after its expiration date and you have six-months to recertify. After six-month you will need to recertify. This class consists of at least three hours of lecture and review. Students are required to take and pass a 25 questions exam and perform a proctored hands-on exam on a double check (ASSE 1015) and reduced pressure assembly (ASSE1013). The course includes the $50 ASSE recertification fee.

This hands-on basic surveying class includes measuring angles with a theodolite, electronic distance measurement, leveling, elevation, and a review of basic trigonometry, with a focus on utility construction applications. This class is an introduction to safety issues that affect water quality system operators. General safety issues and specific Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations will be reviewed. Topics covered include hazard communication, blood borne pathogens, chemical safety, respiratory protection, lockout-tag out, and general safety practices. Registration deadline is October 10.

- Waste Stabilization Ponds/Lagoons Operation and Maintenance

This two day course will cover wastewater composition, lagoon types, facultative and aerated lagoon operational theory, dissolved oxygen and Ph measurement, calculating hydraulic and organic loading, detention time, geometric mean, average flow and percent removal and NPDES permits. This two day Activated Sludge Process Control course will be held as a pre-conference workshop at the WWQ/PCA annual conference to be held at the Parkway Plaza 10/27-31. This course will cover the basics of activated sludge process control and be taught by Mr. Ron Schulyer. Ron is widely recognized as one of the top trainers in the wastewater industry on this topic and his classes are always very informative. We will be focusing this class on entry level personnel but it will serve as a great review for anyone who operates a activated sludge system.
